The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Hamid Bobboyi, has revealed that over 30% of Nigeria’s teaching workforce has exited the profession in the past three years. Bobboyi made this announcement during a six-day training workshop organized by the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with UBEC for 30 School Support Officers on SMASE and Jolly Phonics in Kano.

Describing the situation as alarming, Bobboyi explained that many teachers retired, while others left the profession in search of better opportunities, without being replaced. He commended the Kano State Government for its proactive efforts in recruiting new teachers to fill the gaps left by retirees and urged other states to follow Kano’s example.

“Nationwide, we have lost over 30% of our teaching workforce in the last three years, particularly since the onset of COVID-19. This is very concerning. While some teachers retired, others left the service without replacements,” Bobboyi stated.

He also highlighted the importance of improving teacher welfare, emphasizing that educators play a crucial role in shaping the future leaders of the country.
