The Federal Ministry of Education, after Tuesday’s announcement that schools will reopen on August 4 for exit classes, has further given clarification that only schools designated as centres for the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) are permitted to reopen.
The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba made this disclosure to newsmen on Monday, during the Presidential Tax Force (PTF) briefing on COVID-19, explained that all primary schools and all other classes were excluded from the scheduled resumption of schools on August 4.
“All Primary Schools and all other classes were excluded,” he said.
The Minister stated that, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) had agreed that only exams peculiar to Nigeria would be taken from September 5 to 14, while exams common to all West African countries would proceed from September 17.
He hinted that Nigeria would domesticate its own time-table for the exams, while revision classes would commence today.
On how much have States prepared for reopening of schools for exit classes, Nwajiuba informed that, a report on State’s preparedness was expected on July 31, which would clarify which centres would open, and how they would open and address all gaps.
He noted that State Governors, Commissioners for Education and all other stakeholders have reach a consensus for school to reopen and prepare the students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) which will begin on August 17.
