Anambra Hosts First Schools Tax Competition to Raise Awareness
The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) recently held its first Schools Tax Competition to promote tax education and awareness among private secondary school students across the state. The month-long event, called The Tax Talk Show, focused on teaching students about the importance of paying taxes for societal growth and development.
Themed “Increasing Tax Awareness in Tomorrow’s Leaders,” the program aimed to empower students with financial knowledge and civic responsibility. Speaking at the grand finale in Awka, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, emphasized the significance of tax payment in building a prosperous Anambra. He assured residents that their taxes would be effectively used to achieve his vision of making the state livable and prosperous.
“The competition highlights the importance of financial literacy and the role of young minds in shaping the economy,” said the governor. “This initiative is not just a contest but an educational platform to teach students about taxation, finance, and economics.”
Chief Greg Ezeilo, CEO of AIRS, stated that the agency would continue engaging schools and stakeholders through campaigns to boost tax compliance. He noted that AIRS, leveraging technology and awareness campaigns, aims to generate N10 billion monthly for the state.
Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on IGR, Mrs. Onyeka Amara-Kate, applauded the initiative, saying, “This program has deepened tax knowledge and opened conversations in communities. Students can now educate their families about taxation.”
Lady Hannah International School, Awada-Onitsha, emerged the overall winner, with Grace Court International School and Maris Comprehensive College securing second and third places. Winners received cash prizes and trophies, and the event will now be an annual occurrence.
