ASUU Condemns Dismissal of Lecturers, Accuses Universities of Victimization
ASUU Owerri Zone has condemned the dismissal of lecturers, calling it illegal. The union organized a rally that started at 10 a.m. to protest this action.
In a statement, ASUU also highlighted other universities where its members are facing victimization, including Kogi State University (KSU), Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma (AAUE) in Edo State, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Anambra State, and the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) in Imo State.
The statement expressed dismay at the reluctance of university administrations, governing councils, and visitors to address the growing victimization of academic staff who stand for truth. It noted that the victimization includes dismissal, suspension, denial of promotion, salary seizures, and non-payment of promotion arrears.
ASUU specifically mentioned the injustice in the judgment against its members at Kogi State University, Anyigba, who were dismissed in 2019. These members, including union leaders, were accused of unauthorized actions regarding confidential documents, but they have consistently denied the allegations.
