ASUU praises Edo governor for reinstating dismissed staffs
Edo Governor Okpebholo Reinstates Unlawfully Dismissed AAU Staff, Earns ASUU Praise
The Ambrose Alli University (AAU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for reinstating university staff members unlawfully dismissed under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In a statement issued on Monday, Secretary to the State Government Umar Ikhilor announced the governor’s decision, emphasizing it as a testament to his commitment to justice and the rule of law.
“The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the immediate reinstatement of staff of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who were unlawfully disengaged in March 2023 by the defunct Special Intervention Team during the previous administration,” Ikhilor stated. He highlighted that the affected staff, many of whom were ASUU members, were dismissed after demanding payment of outstanding salaries and entitlements.
Ikhilor praised the governor’s actions, noting they reflect his belief in fairness, equity, and good conscience. He assured citizens of the administration’s dedication to rectifying injustices.
Reacting to the news, AAU ASUU Chairman Dr. Cyril Onogbosele applauded the governor’s decision as a victory for justice. “This move vindicates our position on the matter and demonstrates the government’s willingness to correct past wrongs. Our members are pleased, and we commend the administration for this step towards fairness and accountability,” he said.
Onogbosele also suggested the union might drop its legal case against the university. “We resorted to court action when the previous administration ignored agreements from a stakeholders’ meeting in March 2023. With this reinstatement, we believe justice has been served, and we will consult with our counsel and the university before deciding on the next steps,” he added.
The union described the reinstatement as a positive turning point, expressing hope for improved relations between the government and the academic community moving forward.
