In response to the upcoming nationwide protests, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has directed Vice Chancellors to ensure the security and safety of university staff and students.

This directive was communicated in a circular issued by the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, dated July 28. The circular was made available to the press in Abuja on Monday.

The minister emphasized the importance of students remaining on campus and focusing on their studies to avoid potential dangers associated with the protests.

“The Federal Government acknowledges the right of Nigerians to peaceful protest but is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property in the event of any protest action,” the circular stated.

Prof. Mamman has instructed Vice Chancellors to take proactive measures to secure the university community.

“Vice Chancellors are to ensure the security and safety of their universities, including staff and students,” the circular read. “They should also issue statements to reassure staff and students of their safety. It is advisable for students to stay on campus and concentrate on their academic pursuits to avoid any risks during the planned protests.”
