FCT School Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands
FCT Government School Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Arrears

Teachers in government-owned schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an indefinite strike, protesting the non-payment of 60% of their arrears by the Area Councils. This action follows a 14-day ultimatum issued by the FCT Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to the six area councils.
The teachers had previously embarked on a strike in January 2024, after suspending an earlier action in November 2023. Their demands include the implementation of a 40% peculiar allowance and the payment of 25 months’ minimum wage arrears. The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had intervened, resulting in a partial payment of 40% by the FCT Administration, while the councils were expected to cover the remaining 60%, which remains unpaid.
According to Abdullahi Shafa, Chairman of the FCT-NUT, the union decided to resume the strike after council chairmen failed to meet their demands. In addition to the unpaid arrears, the union is calling for salary increases, the payment of 40% peculiar allowances, and other outstanding entitlements.
The strike will continue until the demands are met, with parents advised to keep their children at home until further notice. Attempts to reach key officials for comments were unsuccessful.
