FG Unveils New School Curriculum

The Federal Ministry of Education has officially launched a new national curriculum for primary, secondary, and technical schools, set to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
The revised curriculum is designed to reduce subject overload, strengthen practical learning, and equip students with 21st-century skills.
Key Features of the New Curriculum
  • Subject Restructuring
  • Primary 1–3: 9–10 subjects
  • Primary 4–6: 10–12 subjects
  • Junior Secondary: 12–14 subjects
  • Senior Secondary: 8–9 subjects
  • Technical Schools: 9–11 subjects
  • Introduction of Trade & Skill Subjects
Students in basic and junior secondary schools will now be exposed to at least 15 new practical trade subjects such as:
  •  Digital literacy
  •  Solar installation & maintenance
  •  Fashion design and garment making
  •  Event management
  •  GSM repairs and computer hardware
  •  Agriculture (crop production & livestock)
  •  Hospitality and catering services
  •  Beauty and cosmetology
Each junior secondary student is expected to specialize in at least one trade, enabling them to graduate with both academic knowledge and hands-on skills, technology & innovation. At the senior secondary level, the new curriculum integrates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) subjects, alongside emerging fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, programming, cybersecurity, and data science.
Government’s Vision
According to the Ministry, the reform aims to make Nigerian education globally competitive while addressing unemployment by preparing students for both higher education and the job market. Teacher training, learning materials, and infrastructure upgrades have been prioritized to ensure smooth implementation.
The Federal Government noted that the new framework will also strengthen Nigeria’s transition to a competency-based education system, with an emphasis on creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Conclusion
With this curriculum reform, Nigeria takes a major step towards building a generation of learners who are future-ready, skilled, and entrepreneurial. The first phase of implementation will begin in schools nationwide from September 2025.
