CALL FOR THE FUTURE EDUCATION
A new Global Education Monitoring Report by UNESCO has sounded an alarm about the state of learning worldwide. Despite significant progress in school enrollment, the report reveals that six in ten children cannot read a simple sentence or solve basic math problems by the end of primary school.
This crisis, often referred to as “learning poverty,” highlights a major gap between access to education and actual learning outcomes.
THE REALITY BEHIND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
For years, global education efforts have focused on increasing enrollment rates. While millions of children now attend school, the report stresses that being in school does not guarantee learning. In many countries, classrooms remain overcrowded, teachers are undertrained and students lack access to textbooks and digital tools. This means children spend years in school but leave without mastering the skills needed for daily life or future employment.
FINDINGS FROM THE REPORT
- 60% of primary school children worldwide cannot read or perform basic math.
- The learning gap is widest in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
- Many education systems emphasize enrollment statistics but fail to measure or prioritize actual learning outcomes.
Education is more than just a right, it is the foundation of economic growth, equality and innovation. Without urgent action, millions of young people risk being trapped in cycles of poverty, unable to contribute fully to society or compete in the global economy.
The findings also threaten progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030.
RECOMMENDATION FOR CHANGE
- Investing in teacher training and support to improve classroom instruction.
- Increasing education funding for better infrastructure and learning resources.
- Prioritizing foundational skills like literacy and numeracy before moving on to advanced curriculum.
- Leveraging technology and innovation to make education more inclusive and accessible.
The message is clear: schooling must go beyond enrollment. Every child deserves not just the chance to sit in a classroom, but the opportunity to truly learn. Solving the learning crisis is essential for building a stronger, fairer, and more sustainable future for all.
