The government is committed to ensuring sufficient resources to support and sustain education programs across the country, according to Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance. Speaking on Thursday during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Alternative Education, Edun outlined the government’s financial strategies aimed at addressing the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
He emphasized the federal government’s dedication to strengthening education through various initiatives, including the upcoming relaunch of the ‘Home-Grown School Feeding Program,’ which aims to improve school attendance by providing meals to students. Edun explained that feeding children at school would not only enhance their health and well-being but also encourage them to stay in school, thus reducing the number of out-of-school children.
The minister also highlighted other innovative initiatives, such as the “Secretariat for Financing Safe Schools,” as part of the government’s efforts to prioritize education and secure a brighter future for the nation’s children.
Earlier this year, President Bola Tinubu suspended all programs administered by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), including the school feeding program, as part of an investigation into alleged irregularities. The president also suspended Halima Shehu, CEO of NSIPA, and Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, over alleged financial misconduct.
