Universities Canada has raised concerns about a sharp decline in international student enrolment due to a recent cap on student visas. The cap, introduced in January by Immigration Minister Marc Miller, aims to reduce international student intake by 35% over the next two years, addressing issues like housing and healthcare strain. Gabriel Miller, president of Universities Canada, highlighted that initial estimates suggest a 45% drop in enrolments, a figure that could worsen.

The government had expected to approve around 364,000 study permits this year but has revised that number to 292,000, focusing reductions on provinces with the most significant student growth. Universities Canada is worried about the long-term impact on enrolment and competitiveness.
