Lagos Police pledges support to UNILAG, LASU on Africa University games
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka and Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo are set to co-host a major sporting event, attracting over 3,000 students and officials from universities across Africa. This will be the second time Nigeria has hosted these games, which are scheduled for September. The event will feature a wide range of sports, including athletics, badminton, chess, judo, table tennis, karate, taekwondo, swimming, basketball, football, volleyball, and handball.
In preparation for the event, the newly appointed Lagos Police Commissioner, Mr. Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha, pledged full security support during a recent visit from LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and her team to the police headquarters in Ikeja.
Commissioner Mustapha emphasized the importance of providing security, noting, “Providing security is the police’s primary responsibility because if athletes from all over Africa coming to Lagos don’t have a good story to tell, it will reflect poorly on the country’s image. So, we are going to be deeply involved in the sports festival.”
He also expressed satisfaction with the current peaceful state of LASU and assured continued support to maintain this environment.
During her visit, Professor Olatunji-Bello congratulated the Commissioner on his appointment and expressed her delight that he is an alumnus of LASU. She sought his support in ensuring adequate security around LASU and Lagos, particularly during the FASU Games. She stated, “The prayer of LASU and the co-host UNILAG is for them to have a successful outing for all the participants from all over African countries coming for the games.”
The collaboration between UNILAG and LASU aims to provide a memorable and secure experience for all participants, showcasing Nigeria as a capable and welcoming host for international sporting events.
