Lagos State Plans Expansion of Technical Colleges to Meet Growing Youth Demand
The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has announced plans to establish additional Government Technical Colleges across the state’s 20 local government areas. This initiative aims to address the increasing demand for technical education among the youth population and reduce the number of out-of-school children.
Speaking at the 2024 Graduation Ceremony for Technical College Students on Tuesday, Mr. Alli-Balogun highlighted the inadequacy of the current five Government Technical Colleges located in Agidingbi, Ikeja; Adesoba, Amuwo-Odofin; Ikotun, Alimosho; Epe; and Ikorodu. These institutions, established over 40 years ago, are insufficient to meet the aspirations of the 6-3-3-4 education system amidst socio-economic, technological, and political advancements.
In a statement released by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education, Kayode Sutton, the commissioner emphasized the importance of robust technical education in driving national development. He linked Lagos State’s success to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S PLUS Agenda and urged the over 2,000 graduating students to embrace their roles as skilled professionals contributing to economic growth.
“As graduates of technical and vocational education, you possess the skills and knowledge to excel in your careers,” he said. “I challenge you to think beyond your current circumstances, dream big, aim higher, and strive for excellence.”
Mr. Alli-Balogun also commended the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) for its dedication to providing quality education and for producing skilled graduates ready to impact their chosen fields positively.
