Political and business leaders have expressed concerns about the decline of discipline in schools during the 2024 graduation ceremony of the Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt, held at the Borokiri Navy facility. They suggested that the Navy’s training methods could serve as a model to address Nigeria’s leadership challenges.

The Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Ovy Chinedum Chukwuma, shared nostalgic recollections and emphasized the importance of school discipline. He was joined in his sentiments by Vincent Ekpeyong, founder and CEO of Kenyon International West Africa Ltd, and My-ACE China, CEO of Housing and Construction Mayor Ltd. They all agreed that the Navy’s approach to training students holds potential solutions for Nigeria’s leadership deficiencies.

The Rivers State government announced plans to consider adopting the Navy model for public boarding schools in the state, citing the high levels of discipline and character development as essential qualities needed in these institutions. The state government also suggested that this model could be beneficial nationwide to address various leadership and discipline issues.

Governor Fubara’s representative stated, “I wish all Nigerian children could experience this level of discipline and grooming. This is the right foundation for any nation—a college system that instills high discipline, character, and best practices. I am happy this school is in Rivers State. It is very neat and well-ordered with a clean compound.”
