The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has officially distanced itself from a planned protest against the recent fuel price hikes, slated for September 15th.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, described the information circulating about the protest as false and baseless. He emphasized that it does not reflect the organization’s position. Akinteye also called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the source of the misinformation.
“The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is aware of rumors circulating on various platforms, suggesting that NANS is planning a massive shutdown of major cities across the country,” Akinteye stated. “We categorically clarify that NANS has not announced or endorsed any such protest. These reports are entirely baseless and do not represent our organization’s stance or intentions.”
Akinteye reiterated that NANS is committed to peaceful advocacy and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders. He stressed that the organization understands the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the country, particularly in challenging times like these. “NANS does not, and will never, support any actions that could lead to civil unrest or disrupt public order,” he affirmed.
He urged the public, media, and all stakeholders to dismiss these false reports, stating that they are being propagated by faceless entities aiming to exploit NANS’s name for malicious purposes. “These individuals or groups are attempting to destabilize the country and create unnecessary tension among citizens,” Akinteye said. “We categorically dissociate ourselves from any such plans or intentions.”
The NANS Senate President called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the origins of the misinformation. “Those responsible for spreading these falsehoods must be identified and held accountable,” he asserted. “Using the NANS name to promote dangerous and unfounded claims is a threat to national security and a grave disservice to the millions of students who seek positive change through legitimate means.”
He also urged security agencies to act decisively in apprehending anyone attempting to use the NANS name to incite unrest or disrupt national peace. “We must collectively ensure that the integrity of our democratic processes and the rule of law are upheld at all times,” he added.
Akinteye concluded by reaffirming NANS’s commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels. “NANS stands firmly for peace, progress, and the unity of our nation,” he said.
“We appreciate the ongoing support of Nigerian students and the public, and we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and not fall prey to those seeking to manipulate and mislead for their selfish gains,” he added.
