The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has urged a comprehensive revamp of the education sector to ensure affordable and accessible teaching and learning for all. In an interview on Sunday, NCS President Sirajo Aliyu highlighted the organization’s vision for a future where technology transforms how Nigerians learn and work.
As the leading body for IT professionals, NCS is committed to making this vision a reality by staying ahead of technological trends, including artificial intelligence (AI) and data mining. Aliyu emphasized that education would greatly benefit from these advancements, particularly through the integration of AI in tertiary institutions, which would make learning more accessible, affordable, and effective.
“Imagine online classes with readily available resources where students can learn at their own pace. The cost of education would drop significantly, allowing more people to access quality education,” Aliyu said.
He also noted that with government support in creating an enabling environment, NCS could harness AI effectively. He mentioned that efforts by the Nigerian Communications Commission to improve infrastructure and make broadband more affordable would further enhance this vision, with students potentially accessing data for as little as N100.
In a previous virtual event organized by NCS, IT experts also called for innovative approaches to revamp Nigeria’s education sector, with a focus on AI. Professor Abejide Ibijola of the University of Johannesburg stressed the need for fast-paced training for African youth, particularly in Nigeria, to foster innovation. He emphasized that quality teaching must be prioritized if Africa is to embrace a future with AI in education.
