Ogun Government Suspends Teacher Following Student's Death

The Ogun State Government has suspended a teacher from Obada Grammar School in Idi-emi following the tragic death of Monday Ariyo, an SS2 student. Reports indicate that Ariyo died on Friday at the Federal Medical Center in Abeokuta after allegedly being flogged and forced to perform 162 frog jumps as punishment.
The incident occurred when the teacher brought a trash can to the classroom and instructed students not to break it. When Ariyo commented that the bin had been purchased with students’ funds, he was punished and collapsed.
In response to the incident, the state government announced on its X handle that the teacher has been arrested, and the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has been queried for allowing corporal punishment, which violates state regulations.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology sent Ariyo’s family a letter of condolence, expressing sympathy for their loss and pledging to seek justice.
The government’s statement described Ariyo as an exceptional student who will be deeply missed by his peers and the school community. It also offered prayers for the family’s strength during this difficult time.
Additionally, Felix Agbesanwa, the State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), stated that Ariyo was not the only student punished during this incident, revealing that the entire class faced corporal punishment. Agbesanwa noted that Ariyo had mentioned he had been in a bike accident before the punishment.
