Ondo Police Arrest Driver After Fatal Accident Claims Lives of Two Students

The Ondo State Police Command reported on Thursday the arrest of a driver, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, in connection with a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two students from the Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji.

The accident occurred on the Akure-Ondo Expressway in the Olokuta community, located in the Akure South Local Government Area. The victims, Chukwu Athanasius and Oladokun Oyindamola, were riding a motorcycle when a speeding Toyota Camry collided with them, resulting in their immediate death.

Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrest of the driver, stating that the suspect is in custody while the deceased have been transferred to a morgue. “The corpses of the victims have been deposited at the morgue while the driver of the vehicle is already in police custody,” she said.

In addition, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, a representative from the Ondo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), suggested that the accident was caused by excessive speed and improper overtaking. “The crash occurred at the Best Solution Polytechnic area at Olokuta, Ondo Road. A motorbike, red in color, was involved in a head-on collision, and out of three individuals involved, two died instantly. The probable cause of the crash was speeding and wrong overtaking,” Ibitoye explained.

Ibitoye urged road users to exercise patience and adhere to traffic rules to prevent such accidents.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council, Ondo State Chapter, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as a significant loss to the student community. The statement was signed by the association’s leadership: Oluwarotimi Tobiloba Joshua (Chairman), Oluwanishola Ajibola (General Secretary), and Kehinde Blessing (Public Relations Officer).
