Reps Approve Establishment of Four New Federal Universities Across Nigeria
The House of Representatives has approved the establishment of four new federal universities in Borno, Imo, Kaduna and Kano States.
The approval, aimed at expanding access to higher education and improving learning opportunities across the country, was granted during Tuesday’s plenary session following the adoption of reports on four related bills.
The reports were presented by the Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, Rep. Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), who emphasized the importance of the proposed institutions in advancing technological and educational development in Nigeria.
The approved bills include:
- A bill to repeal the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna Act and establish the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna.
- A bill to repeal the Nigerian Army University, Biu (Act 2020) and enact the Federal University, Biu, Borno State.
- A bill to establish the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State.
- A bill to establish the Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano State.
Presenting the report, Rep. Fulata explained that the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna will provide specialized training and research in science, technology, and innovation, while also addressing administrative and disciplinary matters related to students and staff.
He added that the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, when established, will focus on advancing teacher education and contribute to the professional development of educators across Nigeria.
Following standard legislative procedures, the four bills will now be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence before being sent to the President for assent to become law.
