Students Appeal to Sokoto Governor over unpaid tuition
704 Students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Appeal to Sokoto Governor Over Unpaid Tuition Fees
A group of 704 students from Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto have called on the state governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, to help with their tuition fees, fearing their academic pursuits are at risk.
These students, all from Sokoto State, claim that the governor’s special adviser, Abubakar Salame, has allegedly misappropriated funds allocated for their tuition.
In a press briefing on Wednesday, the group’s leader, Usman Yahuza, explained that the state government initially approved tuition payments for 5,994 students in need. Of these, only 5,290 have been registered, leaving 704 students without payment. Yahuza noted that between May 14 and 18, 2024, officials under the special adviser’s direction verified the students eligible for this assistance.
According to Yahuza, the tuition fees for 5,290 students were disbursed in full three installments, but the remaining 704 students received no funding, forcing many into difficult situations. Some have deferred or even withdrawn their studies, while others were issued temporary ID cards so they could sit for ongoing semester exams. When approached for comment, the special adviser stated he would address these allegations at an appropriate time.
