University of Ibadan Students Protest Over 100% Increase in School Fees

Students at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have launched a protest against a significant hike in their school fees, which began in the early hours of Friday.
The protest erupted after the university’s governing council approved the fee increase during a meeting on Thursday. Many students expressed outrage over the more than 100% rise in school fees, which they say is unaffordable for most.
Some students reported that their fees had dramatically increased, with a student from the Department of Human Nutrition stating that fees had risen from N58,000 in the 2022/2023 session to N138,350 for the 2023/2024 session. Similarly, a student from the Department of Animal Science shared that fees had jumped from N70,000 to N150,000 for the same period.
In response to the fee hike, the protesting students have boycotted classes and are urging others to join until the university administration agrees to reduce the fees.
