The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has officially banned the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels as part of efforts to reduce rising energy-related expenses.
In a circular signed by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, it was stated that any student found violating this ban would face rustication from the institution.
This move comes in response to a recent electricity crisis that severely affected the university. The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) increased the university’s monthly electricity bill from N88 million to N250 million. The significant hike led to the disconnection of power to both campuses of the university by BEDC, sparking protests from students after weeks of power outages and reliance on generators. The unrest prompted the university’s Senate to temporarily close the institution to prevent further disruptions.
As the university prepares to reopen on Monday, Bobola urged students to comply with the new regulations regarding electricity use on campus. The circular also emphasized the importance of paying outstanding school levies, with Bobola noting that students without proof of payment would be barred from entering exam halls.
“Payment of outstanding school charges with evidence upon resumption will serve as eligibility for examination and will henceforth be strictly monitored to ensure compliance,” Bobola stated.
Additionally, the registrar warned students against participating in any unruly behavior or unauthorized gatherings, stressing the need for good conduct within the university premises.
