UNN Engineering Faculty Produces Digital Hand Cleaning Machine

In a bid to contribute its own quota and to curtail the spread of COVID-19, the University of Nigeria Nsukka has launched a contactless digital hand cleaning machine that uses censor to monitor body temperature, dispenses hand sanitiser, detergent and water.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Charles Igwe, while inspecting the equipment produced by Faculty of Engineering , stated that the machine was an improvement over the manual hand cleaning machine that dispenses detergent and water.

He said: “This machine is different from what we have seen before; it performs four functions at a time without the user making any physical contact.”

The  Vice-Chancellor was visibly excited after using the machine to clean his hand and measure his temperature.

He called on the Faculty of Engineering and other faculties in the university to design and produce more fabrication that would have direct impact to the society.

Prof. Igwe, while congratulating the Dean of Engineering and his Staff for demonstrating leadership in engineering and fabrication added: “We should go beyond writing research papers to fabrication of machines, equipment and designs that will solve the numerous problems in our society.”

In the same vein, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Emeka Obe, said that the machine was produced within a four week period by the Auto Service Centre of the faculty. He hinted that the production cost, estimated at over N300,000.00 was contributed by staff led by engineer Nwakile in the service centre.

He appealed for sponsorship to enable the faculty mass produce the machine, which he is optimistic would simplify the process of monitoring prevention against COVID-19 Pandemic.

Recall that the Lagos State University, faculty of Engineering COVID-19 Response Team had earlier produced an Automated Solar-Powered Hand Washing Station machine as part of contributions to the fight against the ravaging COVID-19 Pandemic in the country.
