The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reported that 72% of candidates who took this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) achieved credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
During a press briefing to announce the release of the results, WAEC’s Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Josiah Dangut, provided a comparison with last year’s performance. He noted a 7.69% decline in the number of students who attained credit passes in a minimum of five subjects, including English and Mathematics, compared to the previous year, when 79.81% of candidates met this criterion. Additionally, 73.79% of candidates obtained credits in at least five subjects, regardless of whether English Language and Mathematics were included.
Dr. Dangut also revealed that the results of 215,267 candidates, accounting for 11.92% of the total examinees, have been withheld due to alleged examination malpractice. This marks a 4.37% decrease in withheld results compared to the 16.29% recorded last year. A total of 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination from 25,126 recognized secondary schools across Nigeria, with 1,805,216 candidates actually sitting for the exams.
Expressing concern over the increasing use of cell phones in examination halls despite a standing ban, Dr. Dangut highlighted instances of organized cheating in some schools. He assured that all cases of malpractice are currently under investigation, and the findings will be reviewed by the appropriate council committee for final decisions.
Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations can access their results on the WAEC results website, www.waecdirect.org, within the next 12 hours. However, Dr. Dangut cautioned that the results of candidates sponsored by states that are in debt to the council will be withheld until the debts are settled.
“We urge the concerned authorities to address these financial obligations promptly to allow affected schools and candidates to access their results,” Dr. Dangut added.
