The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has prohibited four Nigerian universities from admitting candidates who scored below 200 in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This decision follows the 2024 policy meeting, which set 140 as the minimum benchmark for university admissions, though institutions can set higher benchmarks.
JAMB emphasized that universities like the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), which submitted 200 as their minimum score, cannot admit students with scores below that threshold. Similarly, institutions with benchmarks of 180 or higher must adhere to their self-prescribed minimums, even though the general admission cutoff is set at 140. JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, clarified that no university is permitted to admit students below their declared benchmark, ensuring adherence to the agreed-upon standards.
