Outstanding Student with 293 JAMB Score, 60% Post-UTME Denied Admission Twice, Sparks Public Outcry

Elizabeth Funmilayo Odewusi, an exceptionally talented 18-year-old student, has reportedly been denied admission into the Nursing Science programme at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) for the second consecutive year, despite her impressive academic credentials.

Elizabeth, who scored 293 in the 2025 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination and 60% in UNILORIN’s Post-UTME, had previously attempted admission last year with a score above 280 but was rejected. Determined to succeed, she redoubled her efforts, achieving even higher results this year, yet the outcome remained unchanged.

The repeated denial has sparked widespread sympathy and concern among Nigerians, with many calling the situation a grave injustice against a hardworking student.

“I Don’t Know Whether to Cry or Weep” Advocate Speaks

Mr. Nurideen Yusuf, a staff member of the Court of Appeal in Ilorin and one of those advocating for Elizabeth, described the situation as deeply distressing.

“I don’t know whether to cry or weep. This young lady has consistently shown brilliance, yet luck hasn’t favored her. Last year she scored above 280 but wasn’t admitted. This year she scored 293 in JAMB and also did JUPEB excellently, yet she still couldn’t secure admission. This repeated disappointment may lead to depression and discourage her from pursuing her education,” he said.

Family Concerned: “This Could Break a Young Girl”

A family source highlighted the emotional toll the repeated rejection has had on Elizabeth.

“She is only 18. Last year she passed, but they didn’t admit her. She worked harder this year, scored 293 in JAMB and 60% in Post-UTME, yet she was again denied admission. This is enough to frustrate a young girl and affect her mental health,” the source said.

Elizabeth’s O-level results demonstrate her strong academic foundation:

  • Biology: B3
  • Physics: B3
  • Chemistry: C4
  • English: C4
  • Mathematics: C4
  • Agricultural Science: B2

Nigerians Demand Accountability

The case has triggered reactions across social media, with many Nigerians condemning the repeated denial of admission and demanding transparency from the university and relevant authorities.

Oladimeji Shagaya, a social commentator, stated:

“It is disheartening to see bright students being denied admission without explanation. This injustice has forced many talented youths to abandon their dreams and seek alternative livelihoods, which is not what they aspire to.”

As public scrutiny grows, there are renewed calls for UNILORIN to review Elizabeth’s case and ensure deserving students are given the opportunities they have rightfully earned.
