John Momoh is New UNILAG Acting Governing Council Chairman

As the Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), yesterday appointed a new acting Vice-Chancellor, the Presidency has moved swiftly to appoint John Momoh as the new acting Chairman of UNILAG Governing Council.

Momoh, who is the President of the UNILAG alumni association, and a member of the Council as a representative of the association, is also the Chief Executive officer of Channels  TV.

His appointment was contained in a letter by Sonny Echono, Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, which took effect from August 21.

The letter titled: “Emergency Meeting of the Governing Council of University of Lagos,” Momoh was directed to “consider and, if found suitable, approve the Senate nomination of the acting vice-chancellor” for the university.

The statement read in part: “You are to preside at the meeting in the absence of the substantive pro-chancellor/chairman of council who has had to recuse himself in line with the visitor’s directive.

“You are to also submit a report on the decision of the council to the visitor through the honourable minister of education immediately thereafter.”

Momoh’s appointment comes on the back drop of erstwhile Governing Council Chairman, Wale Babalakin who on August 12, removed Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as vice-chancellor of the institution and appointed Professor Theophilus  Soyombo as acting VC.

The President however, directed Ogundipe and Babalakin to step aside, and authorize the Senate of the university to nominate an acting vice-chancellor.

Recall EDUCARE NEWS reported yesterday, August 24, that the UNILAG Senate elected Prof. Folashade Ogunsola as the institution’s as the new acting vice –chancellor of the institution with a vote of 135, to defeat her opponent and a deputy vice-chancellor of management sciences, Prof.Ben Oghojafor who scored 31 votes.
