AKSU Collaborates with Gender Mobile Initiative to Combat Sexual Harassment

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), collaborated with Gender Mobile Initiative, on the 15th of May 2024. They held a one-day Town Hall meeting today at Tetfund Pavilion 1, Main Campus. The event aimed to sensitize students on the campaign against gender-based sexual harassment under the theme “Making AKSU a Safe Learning and Working Environment.”

Sexual harassment remains a pervasive issue in schools, workplaces, and globally. Organizations and governments are increasingly called upon to implement stronger measures to prevent and address such harassment in society.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Nse U. Essien, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Ita Ewa-Oboho, commended the event organizers. He emphasized the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and outlined measures taken to curb it within the school environment. Prof. Essien encouraged victims to speak up and report incidents, fostering a safe and respectful university community.

Dr. Eme Imah, Acting Director of Gender Affairs at AKSU, highlighted the broader impact of sexual harassment on institutional integrity, trust, dignity, and equality. She urged everyone to contribute to creating a safe and respectful environment, stressing that combating sexual harassment is a collective responsibility.

Barr. Joyce Odabi, Technical and Executive GSS of Gender Mobile Initiative, engaged students in an interactive session, allowing them to share their opinions and knowledge about sexual harassment. She also presented a short educational video on tackling harassment issues.

Barr. Feyi Kadiri, Research and Policy Lead at Gender Mobile Initiative, introduced the “CampusPal” app, designed for the confidential reporting of sexual harassment. She encouraged students to download and use the app to help address and report issues anonymously.
