Senate Passes Bill For The Establishment of City University of Tech, Auchi and Two others

The Nigeria Senate on Wednesday passed a bill seeking to establish City University of Technology, Auchi, Edo and two other tertiary institutions in the country.

Also Included, are the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta, and the Federal College of Education, Giwa, Kaduna.

The Upper Chamber passed the three bills after a clause- by- clause consideration of the report by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund, presented by Senator Baba Kaita during a plenary session.

The  bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Maritime University was sponsored by Senator James Manager, while Senator Francis Alimikhena, sponsored that of University of Technology, Auchi.

Senator Uba Sani sponsored the bill for the establishment of Federal College of Education, Giwa, Kaduna State.

While presenting the report, Senator Kaita stated that the Federal Polytechnic Auchi was running degree programmes in affilation with Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, Anambra with enrollment of over 50,000 students in full and part-time.

He added that upgrading the institution to a Federal University would promote training for high skills in the areas of technical vocational education.

It would be recalled that the Senate in 2018, passed six bills seeking the establishments of Federal Tertiary Institutions in different parts of the country, with four Polytechnics, one College of Education and one University.
